First, the fans sold out the original venue, then they got upgraded to the Paradise, only for them to sell it out again a few weeks later? Surprising? Author’s note: considering the loyal followings of both Dan Campbell and hometown heroes the Future Teens, what other outcome could there have been? The Teens have had a busy summer. They’ve been on tour internationally, and across the United States with Aaron West & the Roaring Twenties. They’ve released two new singles, and just can’t be stopped. (dear reader may they never stop)
The show had the usual hits: “In Love or Whatever” created its required crowd swell during the line “Boston Sucks!” (IYKYK) and “BYOB” even elicited some emotional moshing, much to the chagrin of folks standing at the center of the room. This band is so in tune with their fans; frontman Amy Hoffman checked in after the mosh incident to make sure everyone was okay (as all good bands should).
What really shined during the Teens’ set were their newest songs. The two recent singles speak to the emotional depth of a band that keeps finding new ways to be vulnerable on stage. “Mourning Time” is a powerful, punch-in-your-gut, heart wrencher about the world continuing to spin when you wish it would stop. Daniel Radin is rarely so raw, nearly cracking his voice on the line “God Laughs / the baby dies”. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Amy’s track “Double Down”, which is about finding trans joy and the surrealness of existence: “I cut my hair / I’m someone’s son now”.
